6 hours later
just wanted to post to give a more detailed update on the events that took place last night. first of all, and most importantly, both mommy and baby are doing great.
well, just after midnight last night, jenn finally made it to 10 cms and it was time to push. and push she did, which is hard to do when you’ve been in labor for 16 hours and have had nothing to eat in 31 hours AND the epidural seemed to be wearing off. but jenn was a trooper and when we said “push”, she pushed. hard. for an hour. then the doctor checked progress….slow…so we opted to try some more. at this point, jennie was really starting to feel the pain of the contractions despite the epidural. after another hour of pushing and more progress checks, the baby just wasn’t moving, jenn was in pain, it was 2:30am, it was recommended we go for the c-section. maddie just never really dropped.
so we went into the O.R. around 3:15am, i was decked out in my scrubs like Jack from LOST! jennie was all ready to go and the next thing we know the baby was delivered! we were so happy and relieved after 41 weeks, and 2 of the longest days of our lives, they cleaned her up and we just fell in love…she had to be cleaned up first before i could REALLY love her
after we met madeline for the first time, the doctors took her back to the nursery and i stayed with jenn while they finished the surgery. we got to spend some quality time with her early this morning. i got to change her first diaper (LUCKY ME!) and am still trying to perfect the fine art of swaddling. jennie is trying to rest and recover and be a mom, STILL without really being able to eat anything yet. but she’s doing great. we’re all tired but ecstatic. actually, i’m not sure how happy madeline is about this whole ordeal, but we’re trying to make her as happy as possible.
turns out the reason she wasn’t really making any progress was because she was trying come out sunny-side up. i can just picture her in there, laying on her back, hands behind her head, like she’s going down backwards on a waterslide ride! she’s a funny one, this kid.
we’ll try and take some more pictures and post them throughout the day.
thanks you all for all your kind words and thoughts!
love,
steve, jenn & madeline
