speaking of the hospital, this summer while we were on vacation, i picked up a copy of “seabiscuit” in a used book shop! awesome book! awesome horse. we saw the movie a couple weeks ago and while it was pretty good, it was no match for the book.
speaking of someone who was no match for seabiscuit, let’s talk about War Admiral, who lost to the biscuit in what is widely considered the greatest match race of all time. War Admiral, of course, was the offspring of Man O’ War. (Seabiscuit was the offspring of War Admiral’s half-brother, Hard Tack).
Both War Admiral and Man O’ War were owned by none other than Samuel Riddle. Mr. Riddle was a native of Delaware County and had a large farm there. His will earmarked $2.5 million and 72 acres of his land to be used to build a hospital to serve the residents of Media, PA and the surrounding area. This is the same land on which Man O’ War grazed after his retirement.
Pretty neat!
